Demarco, “A Nuh Whore”

30 Dec

I’m feeling this oldie but goodie right about now (oldie as in last summer.) Demarco knows, get it girl.

Mavado, “Starlight”

30 Dec

It kinda feels like I’m playing catch up on a weeks worth of under the radar dancehall sliders. This Di Genius “Starlight” track dropped right before Sting and has already accumulated 9,000 hits on Youtube… and I’m just now getting to it. Things seem to be shifting a little in the the dancehall world. I’m starting to wonder if PMA (positive mental attitude) will be the new fuel for dancehall anthems. Just look where Lisa Hype’s bad attitude got her. Portmore-less. Get Mavado’s “Starlight” here.

Vybz Kartel, “2010″ Official Music Video

28 Dec

Look, Vybz filmed this video in his entry way. That’s kinda hospitable. But really, this feels more like a hang out then a video. Is that what’s up for 2010? Somehow I was imagining cars that could fly. Also can Blak Ryno come out of hiding and do something. I wanna hear what’s up with him in 2010.

Elephant Man, “Whine” BOOPS RIDDIM

28 Dec

Last week I took a nice long break from the keys to spend time with the family, but I start my extended stay in New York today so I’m ready to wrap my head around some new dancehall riddims and good ‘ol wacky Elephant Man fashion. First off the Boops Riddim dropped a few days ago from Juxx Box producer Shane Brown as a tribute to the late musician/producer Wycliffe ‘Steely” Johnson of duo “Steely and Clevie.” It features tracks from Konshens, Elephant Man, Busy Signal, Assassin and a few others. I was gonna post the Busy Signal songs but this Elephant Man video really orchestrates his fashion so well… don’t you think? Secondly, I don’t even think I need to say it, but… I already miss Jamaica. Get your own little Jamaica by downloading the riddim here and also read Eddie “Stats” post on theFADER.com right after Steely’s passing over here.

Interview with Vybz Kartel

18 Dec

JTV’s Entertainment Report did an interesting interview with Vybz Kartel about the Gully/Gaza truce, this year’s Sting and clashes with Bounty Killer. The artiste makes a honest point: “when artists feud it’s primarily to make money and keep interest in dancehall… but right now Jamaica is not in the mood for a clash, right now things are too serious.” He also does a lot of side talking about “dinosaur” Bounty Killer and what will happen at this year’s Sting.

Vybz Kartel, “Unfaithful (Dont Kill Him)”

17 Dec

Man, things just keep heating up in Vybz Kartel’s musical “love life”. Probably an entirely fictitious song– or not– but Vybz Kartel really knows how to paint a vivid picture. It’s almost approaching R. Kelly status. Get it here.

Busy Signal, “Soon You Will Find Out”

16 Dec

Busy Signal actually says, “Crash mi plane between dey gyal twin towers, give her dey powers” in this Di Genius track which is totally inappropriate and… kinda funny. Busy Signal never stops being gyallis as hell, always singing about, well, you know. Unfortunately, this week I haven’t had much time to post and next Sunday I leave for a month to New York so hopefully after Christmas winds down I’ll be giving up a little dancehall love from the New York scene. That most likely includes whats good from Max Glazer’s new night at Santo’s which will probably not be as chill as a Friday night Kingston soundsystem but will most likely sound the same. Also, this new Di Genius riddim, I been trying to remember the melody it’s from and I’m going blank. Strike a bell with anyone? Get it here. (via Caribbean Media Galaxy)

Serani feat Ding Dong, “Skip To Ma Luu” (Official Video)

14 Dec

I’m pretty sure this video has been playing on ReTv for a while so it feels a little late to be just now popping up on youtube. Still, the “Skip to ma Luu” dance has never slowed down and I’m pretty sure the liquor in Ding Dong’s red cup never runs dry, so there really is no harm in playing this song over and over again.

Vybz Kartel, “Baby Mother”

13 Dec

“Baby Mother” is not what you’d expect to come from Portmore’s baddest but after Vybz Kartel’s “Love Dem” track (which has reached “Romping Shop” frequency in club rotations) revealed that Kartel may or may not have impregnated not only one, but two girls last year there might be a few loose ends to tie up in his love life. Who knows if that rumor is really true or not, or for which baby mother this “Baby Mother” track is fathered for (most likely his boo Shorty) but it’s bewildering the amount of music Kartel manages to push out while also building an empire one baby at a time. Get the track here.

Mavado and Kartel, New and Old tracks

10 Dec

Despite my skepticism, it’s looking more and more like the peace truce between Mavado and Vybz Kartel is the real deal. Not more then a week after appearing on stage at the Tivoli Gardens Jamboree together a rough cut of collaboration tracks has been laid down. While the first two tracks, “Nuh War Wid Knife” and “Gunrise” are from the vault, they emphasize Mavado and Kartel’s clashing styles best. The new tracks, while a little shaky still, show signs that the jammer we’ve been waiting for from the two most radio saturated voices in contemporary dancehall could be lingering on the horizon. Check them out here. (via Honey for Bears)
